Purchasing Quarter Midget Race Car

If you already have a Quarter Midget Race Car, run it…

When it comes to purchasing Quarter Midget Race Cars it is much like buying a pick-up truck.  You can get a Chevrolet, Ford, Dodge along with other manufacturers.  They all are good brands and all of them will get the same job done.  It’s just a matter of preference.

Every year there seems to be a new Quarter Midget Manufactures out there selling their cars.

The most popular cars at the MQMRA are the Nervo/Coggins (50% of the population) and GT American (35% of the population).  Other vehicles on the track are Rice Cars, Fiser, FastTrack and Bullriders. (15% of the population combined).

This comes in useful to know what types of cars are most common at the track.  This helps with tech support from club members and accessibility to replacement parts at the track.

First of all not all cars are sized the same.  Some cater to small children while others are more for larger children.  Be sure to ask the owner the age and size of the original driver.

Engines - For both novice classes the engine needed would be the Honda GX120 or Briggs Animal Engine.  There are larger sized/faster engines for upper classes, but the entry classes use the Honda GX120 or Briggs Animal.

When purchasing a new/used car there are some important things to look for from the latest rule changes which can be costly updates to the vehicle. These updates usually have not been done to cars that haven't been raced for a couple years.

2011,

  • Allowing of the Animal Engine Platform.

2010,

  • There were no updates...

2009,

  • GX120 engines need to have a new/updated flywheel.  This flywheel costs around $100.00 and can be purchased from www.nr-racing.com.

2008,

  • Hydraulic braking systems need to have steel braided lines.  Older units used the Nylon/plastic line with is no longer allowed in QMA.  This update is around $80.00 and can be purchased at www.QMparts.com.

  • Seat belts need to be replaced every 2 years or reconditioned every 2 years.  Check the dates on the seat belt.  Seatbelts cost around $60.00 and can be found at www.QMparts.com.

  • Heel stop for the brake pedals or full length pedals.  www.QMparts.com.

When and how to buy a Quarter Midget.

The best time of the year to purchase a Quarter Midget Race Car is at the end of the racing season.  This is when the prices are low and cars are abundant.  The worst time to look for a car is in the spring.  (Especially around “Try It You’ll Like It.”) Vehicles are scarce during the begining of the season.
